Authorities in Weslaco have provided new details about a barricade situation that unfolded last night. Our reporter, Samantha Ruiz, spoke with the Weslaco PD and has the latest update.
According to Weslaco PD, the incident began around 7 p.m. when officers responded to a possible shooting in the 1900 block of Abilene Drive. Upon arrival, officers encountered a suspect who fled the scene in a Chevrolet pickup truck, leading to a pursuit. The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and barricaded himself inside a nearby house.
Throughout the night, authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect to surrender peacefully. However, due to the situation’s escalating nature, tactical action was eventually taken to apprehend him.
The man’s identity has not been released, but officials have stated that he has an extensive criminal record and is a known gang member. Despite this, authorities do not believe that this incident was related to gang activity.
“This appears to be an isolated incident,” said a spokesperson for the Weslaco PD. “The suspect seemed to be acting alone and not as part of any organized criminal activity.”
During the standoff, neighbors in the vicinity were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. Additionally, police discovered a bullet casing at the scene.
