South Padre Island Organization Urges Community to Donate Christmas Trees for Sea Turtle Conservation

A South Padre Island organization is rallying the Rio Grande Valley community to join a unique conservation effort. Their mission? To save sea turtles through an innovative approach involving donated Christmas trees.

“Donating your Christmas tree is a great way to reuse something you would otherwise dispose of. We use them to rebuild our dune system, which helps catch sand and rebuild our dunes,” explained an organizer from the group.

Why Sand Dunes Matter

Sand dunes play a critical role in the survival of sea turtles. They provide nesting grounds for these marine species, making their preservation a priority. By repurposing Christmas trees, the group can strengthen and restore the dunes, creating a more conducive environment for sea turtles.

How to Donate

The organization welcomes Christmas tree donations at their office at 6617 Padre Boulevard on South Padre Island from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until January 4th.
