Bee Attack: Five Stung During Hive Disturbance at Harlingen Home
Firefighters Respond After Tree-Trimming Job Disrupts Hive
HARLINGEN, TX — A routine tree-trimming job turned hazardous on Monday afternoon when five individuals were stung by bees at a residence on West Buchanan Street, prompting a response from the Harlingen Fire Department.
Among those affected were a 40-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl, both of whom were treated at the scene by emergency personnel. The remaining three victims — tree workers who had been cutting near a hidden hive — declined further medical treatment.
Quick Response Prevents Further Harm
Emergency crews arrived promptly and administered on-site medical care, ensuring that no victims required hospitalization. The fire department also worked to neutralize the immediate threat while alerting nearby residents to avoid the area.
The hive was located within the branches of a tree in the property’s yard — a common occurrence in South Texas during warmer months, where bees are actively seeking shelter.
Bee Safety Reminders from First Responders
Bee attacks can escalate quickly, especially when hives are disturbed in populated areas. Fire officials shared the following safety tips:
- Call professionals for hive removal
- Avoid swatting or disturbing visible bees or nests
- Use caution when performing outdoor work near trees or eaves
- Seek medical attention immediately if stung multiple times or if allergic reactions occur
This incident serves as a seasonal reminder of the importance of public awareness and caution during spring and summer, when bee activity increases across the Rio Grande Valley.
