McAllen Standoff: Police Shoot Aggressive Suspect Outside Station
A tense situation unfolded earlier today outside the McAllen Police Station, ending with a man being shot by officers following a verbal altercation.
The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m., when a Hispanic man, later tentatively identified as 31-year-old Brian Colunga, began banging on the building’s glass. Officers attempted to verbally de-escalate the situation, but the suspect’s behavior escalated aggressively.
According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, officers initially tried to subdue Colunga using pepper ball rounds. “At that point, he threw one knife at one of the officers and then charged at another officer with another knife in hand,” Rodriguez explained. Faced with an imminent threat, one officer, identified as Kyle Minister, discharged his weapon, striking Colunga two or three times.
Colunga sustained injuries to the upper body, leg, and hand area and is currently receiving emergency medical care. The incident has raised questions about the use of force and the challenges faced by law enforcement in high-stress situations.
McAllen PD has initiated an investigation into the incident, which will scrutinize the sequence of events leading up to the shooting and the actions taken by officers. The community awaits further details as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding this alarming confrontation.
