Family of Cyclist Hit by UTRGV Students Seeks Help for Medical Bills
Edinburg, TX – Family members of 37-year-old Francisco Javier Hernandez, who remains hospitalized after a hit-and-run accident involving three UTRGV students, are asking the community for help with medical expenses. Hernandez was struck while riding his bike near 21st Street on University Drive in Edinburg last Tuesday night.
Injuries and Medical Procedures
Hernandez has undergone multiple surgeries due to the severe injuries sustained in the accident, including broken ribs, a fractured leg, and internal injuries that required six blood transfusions. “My brother had surgery on his right leg and another surgery for his ribs,” said Jessica Hernandez, Francisco’s sister. “He will also need surgeries on his hand and nose.”
Despite his serious injuries, Hernandez is now in stable condition. However, the family faces mounting medical bills, and Francisco, being the primary breadwinner, is unable to work during his recovery.
Community Support Needed
The family has launched a GoFundMe page titled “Help Francisco’s Family” to help cover medical costs and support Francisco’s family during his recovery.
Jessica Hernandez expressed her gratitude for any help the community can offer. “The doctor says he will get better, but it’s going to take time. We appreciate any support during this difficult time,” she said.
Appeal to Drivers
In the wake of the accident, Jessica Hernandez urged drivers to be more vigilant on the roads. “Those at fault just left my brother there, but the good thing is they eventually turned themselves in. I ask drivers to stay alert because this has been incredibly hard for our family.”
