Texas Lawmakers Reject SpaceX-Backed Plan for Boca Chica Closures

Close Vote Halts Push to Shift Beach Access Authority from County to Corporation

AUSTIN, TX — A controversial proposal that would have granted SpaceX expanded authority to close Boca Chica Beach during launch operations was voted down this week by the Texas House State Affairs Committee. In a tight 7–6 vote, lawmakers rejected Senate Bill 2188, the companion legislation to House Bill 4660, following growing concern over public access and corporate influence.

The bill, which had the backing of SpaceX, aimed to shift control of beach closures from Cameron County authorities to the private aerospace company, potentially allowing SpaceX to unilaterally restrict access to the public beach during rocket testing and launches.

“The county has shown the proper discretion and authority with respect to Space-X and any beach closures for space flight activities.” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., who publicly opposed the bill.
