State-of-the-Art Judicial Center Marks New Era for Hidalgo County
EDINBURG, TX — After nearly six years of planning, setbacks, and construction, Hidalgo County officials gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the county’s new courthouse, a towering symbol of justice and civic investment in the Rio Grande Valley.
The seven-story, $190 million complex, which broke ground in 2019, now officially opens its doors, offering 30 modern courtrooms and expanded facilities to accommodate the region’s growing judicial needs.
A Project Years in the Making
The courthouse project faced a series of unexpected delays, including:
- Severe flooding during early construction phases
- Construction issues
- Work stoppages and supply chain issues tied to the COVID-19 pandemic
Despite the hurdles, county leaders remained committed to completing the project, citing the need to replace the aging and overcrowded previous courthouse with a facility that meets modern demands.
The building, located in downtown Edinburg, now stands as one of the most advanced judicial centers in South Texas, offering enhanced security, technology-integrated courtrooms, and improved public access.
