Three UTRGV student athletes have been charged in a hit-and-run that left a cyclist in serious condition, with the driver potentially facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Edinburg, TX – A cyclist remains hospitalized in serious condition following a hit-and-run incident on Tuesday night in Edinburg. Three UTRGV student athletes have been charged in connection with the incident, which took place near 21st Avenue and University Drive.

Charges Filed

The driver, 19-year-old Robert Brown, appeared in court and was charged with accident involving serious bodily injury and failure to report a hit-and-run. According to Edinburg PD, Brown was driving a gray Chevy Silverado when the accident occurred around 9 p.m. Two other student athletes, 19-year-old Juan Taylor and 18-year-old Jaden Cervantes, were also charged with failure to report the incident and have been issued $10,000 bonds.

Cooperation with Authorities

Brown contacted the police and cooperated with authorities in identifying Taylor and Cervantes. “Through witness statements and cooperation, we were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle,” said Edinburg PD spokesperson Lt. Gabriel Vela-Reyna. Brown contacted the police shortly after the accident to report the incident.

Cyclist’s Condition and Ongoing Investigation

The cyclist, an unidentified man, is currently being treated at DHR Health and remains in serious condition. UTRGV’s athletic department confirmed the involvement of the three student athletes, stating that they are gathering information and will take appropriate action as necessary.

Potential Legal Consequences

Brown, who was given a $60,000 bond, could face between 2 and 10 years in prison if convicted. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and have urged the community to report any information that may assist with the case.
