Hidalgo County Investigates Four New West Nile Virus Cases Amid Rising Concerns

Health officials in Hidalgo County are urging the public to take preventative measures as four new cases of West Nile virus have been reported, adding to the three confirmed last month.

Hidalgo County, TX – Health officials are investigating four new cases of West Nile virus in Hidalgo County, with concerns mounting as the number of cases in central and north Texas areas also increases. The local health department is ramping up mosquito testing, and so far, all tests have returned negative for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

In a press release, Eddie Olivarez, Hidalgo County’s Chief Administrative Officer, urged residents to take preventive actions against mosquitoes, which are the primary carriers of West Nile virus. “Cut your lawns. Maintain your lawns. Remove standing water. Use larvicide. Go to the big box stores. Get larvicide. You could fog your backyard. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and use repellent to help prevent mosquito bites,” said Olivarez. He also reminded the community not to overlook their pets, who are equally vulnerable to mosquito bites.

Preventative Measures to Take

Residents are strongly encouraged to:

  • Remove standing water from their properties, including in flower pots, gutters, and birdbaths.
  • Use larvicides in areas where stagnant water is unavoidable.
  • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.
  • Protect pets by keeping them indoors or using pet-safe mosquito repellents.

Last month, three cases of West Nile virus were confirmed in Hidalgo County, and with four new cases under investigation, health officials are doubling down on their efforts to educate the public and prevent further infections.
