DPS Urges Caution: 142 Accidents Spark ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Campaign
Texas drivers reminded to prioritize safety as DPS highlights critical road safety measures following alarming accident statistics.
DPS Urges Caution: 142 Accidents Spark ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Campaign
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is sounding the alarm for drivers across the state to heed road safety measures, specifically the ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ campaign. This initiative has been emphasized following a concerning rise in accidents involving DPS patrol units, with 142 incidents recorded since 2017. Among these, 46 troopers have sustained injuries and, tragically, two have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Understanding the ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Law
The ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ law requires drivers to take specific actions when approaching emergency vehicles on the road. According to DPS, upon sighting emergency vehicles, ranging from police and ambulances to the Texas Department of Transportation and wreckers, drivers should either vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle or slow down by 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit if moving over is not feasible.
During a recent ride-along in McAllen, DPS Corporal Vital Signs demonstrated the necessity of this law. Several drivers were observed disobeying these rules, including one that required a traffic stop. This incident underscored a common issue: distracted driving, especially due to cell phone usage. “For the most part, they tend to tell us that they’re on their phone,” Corporal Saenz noted, pointing out that speeding is another contributing factor to these dangerous situations.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
The penalties for failing to adhere to the ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ law are steep. Offenders can face fines up to $1,250, and in cases where serious injury occurs, the fine can escalate to $4,000. Additionally, violators may face arrest for a Class A misdemeanor, highlighting the severity of the issue and the importance of compliance.
Authorities stress the importance of respecting traffic signs and the safety of law enforcement officers.
A Call to Action
The DPS’s ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ campaign is a critical reminder for Texas drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. As the number of accidents involving patrol units continues to rise, the need for awareness and adherence to traffic laws becomes increasingly urgent. By reducing distractions, obeying speed limits, and respecting emergency vehicles, drivers can contribute to a safer driving environment for everyone.
