Texas Senate Bill 1841 Expands Protections for Domestic Violence Victims

Austin, TX – Local nonprofit organizations are celebrating the passage of Senate Bill 1841, a significant piece of legislation passed by the Texas Legislature to expand resources and protections for victims of domestic violence. Sponsored by Senators Juan Hinojosa and LaMantia, the bill broadens access to domestic violence centers and clarifies the definition of family violence.

Key Changes in Senate Bill 1841

Previously, protections under domestic violence laws primarily focused on married couples. With the passage of Senate Bill 1841, the definition of domestic violence has been expanded to include couples who are not married but are in a relationship. This shift ensures that individuals in dating or cohabitating relationships are equally protected under the law.

“There is shelter available for victims of this type of abuse, whether they are married or not,” said Genesis Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the nonprofit organization Mujeres Unidas. “It could be a couple together for a few months or years. Being in a relationship qualifies them for help.”

Support from Local Organizations

Nonprofits like Mujeres Unidas, which assist survivors of domestic violence, have praised the bill for expanding access to support services. The clearer legal language allows a broader range of individuals to seek shelter and help when facing family violence.

Resources for Victims

Gonzalez also reminded the community that help is available for those in need. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, you can call the Crisis Hotline at 1-800-580-4879.
