Toll Scam Alert: TxDOT Warns Drivers About Fake Text Messages Threatening Registration Suspension
Fraudulent Messages Target Texas Drivers with Unpaid Toll Claims
TEXAS — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is sounding the alarm over a text message scam targeting drivers across the state. The scheme involves fraudulent texts claiming unpaid toll violations, threatening victims with vehicle registration suspension or credit score damage unless they click a link to make immediate payment.
TxDOT officials have made it clear: these messages are fake, and TxDOT does not send toll payment requests via text or email.
“If you receive a message like this, do not click any links, and delete it immediately,” the department stated in a public advisory.
How to Spot the Scam
The scam texts typically:
- Claim the recipient has unpaid toll fees
- Threaten consequences like license suspension or credit damage
- Contain a payment link disguised to look official
TxDOT emphasized that the only number it uses for official text communications is 22498. Any messages from other numbers, especially those prompting payment or login credentials, should be considered fraudulent.
What To Do If You Receive the Scam Text
- Do not click on any links or reply to the message
- Delete the message from your phone
- Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ic3.gov
- For real billing inquiries, call the official TxTag customer service line at 📞 (281) 875-3279
“These scams are not only deceptive—they can lead to identity theft and financial loss,” warned a TxDOT spokesperson.
Ongoing Scam Awareness Campaign
TxDOT is working to spread awareness across its official channels, encouraging drivers to be cautious and verify the source of any toll-related communications. Social media platforms, local governments, and toll road agencies are also joining the effort to combat the scam.
The warning comes amid a broader wave of text-message-based phishing scams (known as “smishing”) that target drivers, shoppers, and even social service recipients.
