First Apprenticeship Graduates Honored in Historic RGV Ceremony

EDINBURG, TX — In a first-of-its-kind celebration for the region, twelve nursing students were honored at a joint graduation ceremony marking their successful completion of the Rio Grande Valley’s first nursing apprenticeship program. The initiative, a collaboration between DHR Health and a local college, represents a significant step toward addressing the ongoing nurse shortage across South Texas.

The program, hailed by local officials as historic, was designed to allow students to earn compensation while training, a model aimed at removing financial barriers and ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified healthcare professionals.

From Vocational to Registered Nurses

The graduates, many of whom entered the program as vocational nurses, have now earned credentials to become registered nurses (RNs). Their journey combined real-world clinical experience with classroom instruction, enabling them to gain hands-on skills while continuing their education.

Each student faced the unique challenge of balancing academic coursework with shifts in medical facilities, a structure that reflects the realities of modern healthcare.
