Authorities Warn Sex Offenders of Serious Penalties for Failing to Register
McAllen Man Turns Himself In After Being Labeled a Wanted Sex Offender
Authorities across Hidalgo County are issuing a renewed warning to registered sex offenders about the legal consequences of failing to comply with registration requirements.
This comes after 56-year-old Jose Luis Hernandez turned himself in to the McAllen Police Department today. Hernandez had been classified as a wanted sex offender for failure to comply with mandatory lifetime registration, a condition imposed following his release from incarceration.
Noncompliance Carries Severe Criminal Penalties
According to the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office, offenders must register even if their case did not result in a conviction. The law applies broadly and strictly, with violations leading to criminal and civil penalties, including:
- State jail felonies
- Second-degree felonies (in cases of repeated or aggravated noncompliance)
- Extended incarceration
- Substantial fines
Covered offenses include sexual abuse, sexual abuse of a minor, solicitation of a minor, and other serious crimes.
Specialized Task Force Monitoring Compliance
A dedicated law enforcement group is actively monitoring compliance and tracking offenders who fail to update their registration as required. Authorities say the goal is to protect public safety and hold offenders accountable.
“The responsibility to register does not disappear just because the offender is no longer under supervision. Failing to do so is a criminal act,” a spokesperson emphasized.
Free State Services for Public Safety
To help the public stay informed, the State of Texas offers free access to verify a sex offender’s residence and status.
To search the registry or verify an offender’s status, visit: https://www.sor.texas.gov
📞 For questions or to report registration violations, contact your local police department or the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Protecting Communities Through Vigilance
Authorities are urging all registered sex offenders to update their information on time and follow the law to avoid further prosecution. This includes notifying authorities of any change in residence, employment, or contact details.
