Harlingen CISD Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez Resigns Amid Controversy, Community Voices Concerns
Harlingen, TX – In a special meeting held this afternoon, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD) accepted the resignation of Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez. The meeting, attended by educators, parents, and community members, highlighted frustrations over alleged wasteful spending and lack of transparency within the district’s leadership.
Superintendent’s Resignation
Superintendent Gonzalez, who took over the role in 2023, did not attend the meeting. His resignation came following a brief executive session, and district officials did not disclose the specific reasons behind his departure. However, in a statement, the district cited “serious issues” that led to the special meeting but refrained from sharing further details due to privacy concerns.
Community Reaction and Criticism
During the meeting, several community members voiced their dissatisfaction with Gonzalez’s leadership and the direction of the school district. Ryan Shaft, a concerned parent, expressed outrage over alleged wasteful spending. “Children go hungry while he rides around in his SUV with his chauffeur,” he stated.
Another point of contention was the decision earlier this year to grant Gonzalez a $10,000 salary increase, effective September 1st, despite the lack of raises for hourly staff such as bus drivers, paraprofessionals, and security guards. “I’m very concerned with the board’s decision not to provide raises for hourly staff this year,” said one local educator.
Interim Leadership
Following Gonzalez’s resignation, the school board appointed Veronica Courtin, a 20-year veteran of the district, as the interim superintendent. Her appointment is expected to help the district transition during this leadership change while addressing the concerns raised by the community.
As the district moves forward, many are calling for increased transparency and accountability from its leaders. For updates on this developing situation, visit the Harlingen CISD website.
