Dr. Luis “Louie” G. Alamia, PT, DPT, experienced a rare moment of speechlessness as he accepted an honor on behalf of his late father, Luis Antonio Alamia, Jr. Recognized as one of 13 “Hometown Heroes” for 2024, Luis Antonio Alamia, Jr., was remembered as a dedicated leader in Edinburg.
Dr. Alamia, a member of the Edinburg school board, expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon his father, highlighting his father’s commitment to community service and family values. Luis Antonio Alamia, Jr.’s legacy lives on through the Luis A. Alamia, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, benefiting student-athletes in the Edinburg School District.
2024 Edinburg Hometown Heroes in Alphabetic Order
- Luis Antonio Alamia, Jr. – Remembered for his leadership, dedication to St. Joseph Catholic Church, and service as an educator in ECISD.
- Dan “The Man” Cárdenas – A beloved coach who mentored countless youth in Edinburg’s middle schools and Little League Baseball.
- Master Sgt. José M. Charles – A Vietnam War veteran who continued to serve his community as an ROTC instructor.
- Carlos Guerra – A prominent figure in the 4-H and FFA community, supporting young people in agriculture.
- Lewis Lodico – A dedicated firefighter and business owner who has served Edinburg for over 50 years.
- Homer Martínez, Sr. – A cross country coach who mentored state-level UIL athletes for over 50 years.
- Martiniano Martínez, Jr. – A martial arts instructor and community leader who initiated the Edinburg Cares Food Drive.
- Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez – Former President of UTPA, instrumental in the university’s growth and success.
- Federico “Fred” Palacios – A successful businessman and community leader who has contributed to various causes in Edinburg.
- Miriam Ríos – A dedicated teacher who impacted students and colleagues alike during her 18-year career.
- Tim Smith – Chief Meteorologist at KRGV Channel 5 News, known for his community service and dedication to education.
- René H. Vela – A respected agriculture teacher who positively influenced students at Mission High School and Edinburg North High School.
- Robert Vela – A beloved football coach whose legacy lives on through Robert Vela High School.
