Community News: Roma High School Senior Shines in Media Program
Accidentally placed in a video production class, Nicolas Lopez found his true passion behind the camera—and became a standout storyteller at Roma High’s Gladiator Television Network.
Accident Turned Ambition: Roma High Senior Becomes Star of Student Media
When Nicolas Lopez walked into what he thought was an audio engineering class at Roma High School, he had no idea the “mistake” would set him on a path to becoming a standout media creator. Now a senior, Lopez has become a leading figure in the Gladiator Television Network, directing projects and scoring original compositions for films he produces.
A Mistake That Sparked a Passion
“I came into the room and saw cameras everywhere,” Lopez recalled. “That was sick. I just kept learning about cameras, editing, and everything video-related.”
What began as a scheduling slip turned into a full-blown passion. By the end of his first year, Lopez was already directing and leading production projects. His work includes public service announcements, voiceovers, commercials, and narrative films—all showcasing a level of professionalism that belies his age.
Creativity Across Mediums
Lopez’s talent isn’t confined to just visual storytelling. He’s also an accomplished musician, using his skills with the guitar to score his own films—a rare combination of audio and visual craftsmanship in the student world.
This multi-talented approach has not only helped his own projects stand out but has also elevated the overall quality of the student media program at Roma High.
Credit Where It’s Due
Lopez is quick to share the spotlight. He attributes his growth to a supportive circle of mentors and loved ones.
“Without them, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done up to now,” he said, referring to his instructors and family members who nurtured his interest in film and encouraged him to explore new creative challenges.
The Gladiator Television Network, Roma High’s flagship media production platform, has given him a strong foundation in both technical skills and storytelling techniques. His instructors, recognizing his dedication and talent, provided opportunities for him to lead, experiment, and innovate.
A Role Model for the Future
Lopez’s story is a testament to the unexpected ways young people discover their calling. His journey—from a mistaken class enrollment to media program standout—demonstrates the power of public school programs in uncovering hidden potential and supporting nontraditional paths to success.
As he prepares for graduation, Lopez is not only leaving behind an impressive body of work but also setting an example for future Gladiator Network students: talent, paired with opportunity and support, can lead to extraordinary things.
