RGV Business ‘Driving with Intelligence’ Fights Drunk Driving with Safe Rides Initiative

San Benito, TX – In the Rio Grande Valley, a local business is taking significant steps to combat the dangers of drunk driving. ‘Driving with Intelligence,’ operated by Jonathan Sanchez and Jessica Camacho, offers safe rides to individuals who are too intoxicated to drive, helping to prevent DUI-related accidents in the region.

The Origin of the Initiative

The idea for ‘Driving with Intelligence’ was born in 2013 while Sanchez was serving time in jail after his third DWI. Determined to make a positive change in his life and his community, Sanchez began jotting down ideas for a business that would offer an alternative to driving under the influence. Since its inception, the initiative has provided over 350 rides, with approximately 200 of those rides being alcohol-related.

“This all started back in 2013 when I had my third DWI,” said Sanchez. “I was able to get a pen and paper, and I just kind of jotted down all my ideas about the business. We’ve done a total of about 350 rides, and I want to say probably about 200 of those have been due to alcohol-related rides.”

How the Service Works

Operating primarily in the San Benito and Harlingen areas, ‘Driving with Intelligence’ provides rides within a 5 to 10-mile radius. However, the team is willing to travel further distances with advance notice, including trips to South Padre Island, to ensure that everyone has access to a safe ride home.

“We eventually want to spread out to the entire Valley,” Sanchez mentioned. “I know this is a huge problem.”

Jessica Camacho, who manages the business alongside Sanchez, emphasized the importance of advance notice for longer rides: “It’s just him and I as drivers. So if we get advance notice, it’s easier for us to go out to South Padre Island.”

The Importance of the Service

With Texas reporting over 23,000 DUI-related crashes last year, resulting in 1,094 fatalities, the need for services like ‘Driving with Intelligence’ is critical. The duo hopes that by offering an alternative to driving drunk, they can help reduce these alarming statistics.

“The main purpose of this business is to make people aware that there are different options out there,” Sanchez said. “We just ask you guys to stay off the streets. Something just happened recently in Rio Hondo that could have been avoided.”
