Three Harlingen Boys Charged with Arson After Fire Destroys Mobile Homes
Juvenile Court Orders Psychological and Home Evaluations as Case Moves Forward
Three boys from Harlingen—two aged 16 and one aged 12—have been formally charged with arson after allegedly starting a fire that destroyed two mobile homes.
Authorities confirmed that the youngest boy is the brother of one of the teens, and all three have been placed in juvenile detention pending further court proceedings.
Court Orders Mental Health Evaluations
During a recent hearing, the presiding judge ordered the minors to undergo triage psychological evaluations, a preliminary mental health assessment used to determine whether they pose a danger to themselves or others.
"For that reason, I ordered a triage, which is a sort of psychological evaluation done by professionals to find out if they are in immediate danger to themselves or to others. I also ordered a home evaluation," the judge stated.
The evaluations will help inform the court’s next steps, including potential sentencing options or rehabilitative measures.
Ongoing Investigation
The Harlingen Police Department and Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate the origin and circumstances of the fire, which began in a vacant lot and spread to nearby homes.
Next Court Hearings Pending
The boys will remain in juvenile detention until their next scheduled hearings, which will take place after the evaluations are completed.
Community Reminder
Officials urge families to talk with children about fire safety and legal consequences, especially during dry and windy conditions that can lead to rapid fire spread.
