Severe Weather and Flash Flooding Slam Rio Grande Valley
Valley Hit Hard by Heavy Rain and Dangerous Road Conditions
Severe storms and flash flooding have created hazardous conditions across the Rio Grande Valley tonight. Residents are urged to remain indoors and avoid travel, as roads throughout the region remain flooded and weather alerts continue.
The flooding began slowly in the afternoon and intensified into the evening, with hail, gusty winds, and structural damage reported in multiple areas.
Storm Track: Hidalgo to Gulf Coast
According to Meteorologist Maria Perez, the most intense weather activity centered in Hidalgo County before shifting eastward toward the Gulf Coast, bringing moderate to heavy rain to Willacy and Cameron Counties.
A flash flood warning remains in effect until 11 p.m., with numerous roads under water.
Take Precautions: 'Turn Around, Don’t Drown'
Perez issued a strong reminder to all drivers:
“It’s very difficult at night to notice when you are encountering a flooded roadway. As we always say, turn around, don’t drown. Please take the necessary safety precautions.”
Flooded roads can be deceptive, especially in the dark. Residents are encouraged to:
- Avoid low-lying areas
- Monitor alerts from local weather services
- Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary
Forecast: Relief by the Weekend
The forecast offers some relief—rain chances will continue into tomorrow, but are expected to diminish by the weekend, with warmer and clearer conditions anticipated by Saturday and Sunday.
