Fatal Crash in Hidalgo County: 75-Year-Old Ascension Lopez Dies

Hidalgo County officials are currently investigating a tragic accident that occurred early this morning. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers reported that the incident took place around 6:16 AM on Benson Palm Road, north of San Lucas Street near Palm View. A gold Chevrolet Malibu, traveling southbound, attempted to pass another vehicle when the driver overcorrected to avoid an oncoming northbound vehicle. This maneuver led to the loss of control, causing the car to veer off the roadway and roll into a bar ditch.

The driver, identified as 75-year-old Ascension Lopez from Mission, did not survive the crash, while a passenger was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with non-life-threatening injuries. The DPS has confirmed that the crash remains under investigation to understand the exact series of events leading to the fatal outcome.
