Texas Legislature Focuses on Border Security, Water Crisis, and Property Tax Relief
Key Issues on the Table for 2025 Legislative Session
As the Texas Legislature begins its biennial session, lawmakers are diving into critical issues that impact both the border and local communities. According to Alondra De Hoyos, who spoke with various legislators, the 2025 session will focus on immigration, border security, water resources, and property tax relief for residents across the state.
Border Security and Drug Smuggling
The border security issue remains one of the top priorities for Texas lawmakers. With Operation Lone Star, launched in March 2021, over 622 million fentanyl doses have been seized by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and other agencies. This quantity is described as enough to kill the entire populations of the United States, Mexico, and Canada combined.
According to officials, efforts will continue to focus on stopping drug smuggling, human trafficking, and protecting the safety of border communities. The state’s focus remains on strengthening border patrol efforts and using innovative methods to combat illegal activities.
Drought and Water Crisis in South Texas
Another major issue facing Texas is the ongoing drought affecting much of the state, particularly the Rio Grande Valley. South Texas is currently experiencing a moderate drought, which is causing significant concern for farmers, ranchers, and families in the region.
Legislators are pushing for funding to support desalination projects, which would convert seawater from the Gulf of Mexico and underground brackish water into potable water. These projects aim to supplement the region’s water supply and ease the strain on local agriculture and businesses.
Property Tax Reduction Efforts
Property taxes have been a burden for many Texas homeowners. In response, legislators are actively exploring measures to reduce property taxes, providing relief for families struggling with rising costs. Officials are analyzing the primary needs of Rio Grande Valley families, as well as those throughout the state, to ensure a better quality of life for residents.
Looking Ahead
With key issues like border security, water supply, and property tax reductions on the agenda, the 2025 legislative session promises to be crucial for addressing the needs of Texas families. Legislators will continue to evaluate proposals and push forward plans to ensure that border communities receive the support they need in these challenging times.
