Intoxication Manslaughter: Jesse Leatherwood Gets 35 Years for Killing Deputy in Cameron County
CAMERON COUNTY, TX – A Cameron County jury has sentenced Jesse Leatherwood to 35 years in prison after finding him guilty of intoxication manslaughter in the death of Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia.
The sentencing follows a tragic crash that occurred last September, when Leatherwood—under the influence of cocaine and Xanax—slammed into Garcia’s patrol unit, killing the deputy on duty. The verdict was delivered last Thursday, closing a case that struck deep into the heart of the local law enforcement community.
A Deadly Collision with Law Enforcement
Deputy Ruben Garcia was working a shift when his marked vehicle was struck by Leatherwood, whose impaired condition left no room for reaction or defense. Garcia died at the scene, leaving behind a legacy of public service and a grieving family.
Prosecutors presented toxicology evidence showing that Leatherwood had both cocaine, a powerful stimulant, and Xanax, a prescription anti-anxiety medication, in his system at the time of the crash. The combination, they argued, was a reckless disregard for life that ultimately cost a dedicated public servant his own.
Justice Delivered, But Pain Remains
Following days of testimony, the jury found Leatherwood guilty and recommended the 35-year sentence. Though many in the courtroom expressed relief at the verdict, the sentencing was also a somber moment for law enforcement officers and Garcia’s family, who continue to mourn his loss.
“This was a senseless, preventable tragedy,” said one official close to the case. “Deputy Garcia’s life was taken because of someone’s choice to get behind the wheel impaired. We hope this sentence sends a strong message.”
Texas Law and Intoxication Manslaughter
Under Texas law, intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony, but sentences can be enhanced depending on the circumstances—especially when a peace officer is killed in the line of duty. The 35-year sentence reflects the severity and impact of the crime, which led to the loss of a sworn officer while performing official duties.
Advocates for tougher impaired driving laws are calling for continued awareness around drugged driving, which, like drunk driving, remains a serious threat on Texas roadways.
