Potential Agreement for Landowners on Border Wall Construction

In recent statements, Congressman Henry Cuellar addressed concerns over the border wall and the potential for landowners to negotiate with the government regarding the use of their property. Cuellar explained that he had spoken with a landowner who is in the process of reaching an agreement with the state. The agreement would allow the government to take land for the wall, with future negotiations and compensation expected in return.

Cuellar emphasized that, despite his personal opposition to the construction of the border wall, this type of agreement could bring benefits to the community. The agreement is seen as a way for landowners to have a say in the process while potentially receiving assistance from the state.

DA Comments on ICE’s Longstanding Authority

Cuellar also commented on the recent federal government announcement that ICE agents have the authority to conduct operations at public places, including courthouses. While some have expressed concerns over this development, Cameron County District Attorney, Luis Saenz, clarified that ICE has always had this authority.

Saenz explained that ICE operations have occurred in the past when there was a wanted individual in a public space, though it remains uncertain whether such operations will increase in frequency. He also pointed out that ICE agents would typically target individuals with federal warrants rather than performing routine arrests.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the increased presence of ICE in courthouses, immigration attorneys advise families with undocumented members to be cautious when attending court proceedings. Experts urge individuals to avoid unnecessary risks and be mindful of the potential consequences of attending public hearings or visiting courthouses.
