Auto Theft Alert: Edinburg Hosts Free Safety Event with Steering Wheel Locks and Prizes
EDINBURG, TX – As vehicle theft and break-ins remain a top concern for Rio Grande Valley residents, the Edinburg Police Department is stepping up with a hands-on, family-friendly event aimed at raising awareness and preventing crime.
The initiative, titled Project 365, kicks off at 6 p.m. at Edinburg Municipal Park and promises more than just safety tips. With a focus on education, empowerment, and community connection, the event will also include free steering wheel locks, games, food, and prizes.
Free Steering Wheel Locks While Supplies Last
One of the event’s key giveaways is free steering wheel locks, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. These visible theft deterrents are designed to help prevent unauthorized use of vehicles—a simple tool with proven effectiveness.
Local officers will be on-site to demonstrate how to use the locks and discuss other anti-theft strategies.
A Focus on Prevention and Education
Project 365 is part of a year-long effort by Edinburg PD to lower auto theft rates by building stronger relationships with the public and increasing awareness of common burglary tactics.
“We want people to have the tools and knowledge they need to protect themselves,” said an Edinburg PD spokesperson. “This is about making our neighborhoods safer together.”
Attendees will receive tips on:
- Parking strategies to deter theft
- What to avoid leaving in plain sight
- How to report suspicious activity effectively
- The latest theft trends in the region
Fun for the Whole Family
To make the event more inviting, Edinburg Municipal Park will also host food vendors, interactive activities for kids, and raffle drawings for safety gear and community-themed prizes.
This community-focused approach is designed to make safety accessible and engaging, while strengthening bonds between residents and law enforcement.
